Project description
LIFE Open Woods is an EU LIFE-funded nature conservation project aimed at enhancing the potential for biodiversity in forests. The project supports the transition from production forestry towards more diverse and biodiverse forest ecosystems.
The measures implemented under the project include:
accelerating the development of diverse and structurally complex forest habitats;
restoring natural dynamic processes in forests through measures such as:
increasing the amount of decaying and veteran trees through the active veteranisation of mature broadleaved trees
increasing the number of sun-exposed oak trunks
restoring more natural hydrological conditions and increasing the presence of water in forests
introducing grazing animals, including European bison and cattle and more
increasing existing populations of wild herbivores to promote greater structural variation in forests
enrichment planting with ecologically valuable tree species and flowering shrubs that are absent or underrepresented
targeted conservation measures for the rare hermit beetle (Osmoderma eremita) and Bechstein’s bat (Myotis bechsteinii)
developing and delivering continual professional training for Danish Nature Agency staff in the management of biodiversity-rich forests, in collaboration with the University of Copenhagen.
The LIFE Open Woods conservation measures are implemented across 23 forests. Of these, 18 are managed by the Danish Nature Agency, two are privately owned forests, one is managed by Stiftung Naturschutz Schleswig-Holstein, and two are owned by the Aage V. Jensen Nature Foundation.
