Gl. Lejre is located approximately 1 km north of Lejre Stationsby. The best place to park is at Lejre Museum at Hestebjerggård. At the museum, you may find maps and lots of information on the area. Locate the car park on the map.
Public transport
Bus No 207 towards Roskilde leaves Lejre Station once every hour and passes through Gl. Lejre. The walk on foot takes about 15-20 minutes. Trains depart Lejre Station for Roskilde, Holbæk and Copenhagen.
Practical information and activities
Most of the area is protected, and part of the land is owned by the Danish Nature Agency. In these areas, you may roam freely. This also applies to enclosures which are accessed via gates or fences. You may roam the privately-owned areas on all marked roads and paths. The forests in the area are privately-owned. Here you may only drive, ride or walk on roads and paths between sunrise and sunset. But be aware, however, that the forests may be closed during hunts etc.
There are toilets – including a wheelchair-accessible toilet - at Lejre Museum.
There is a barbecue area with tables and benches just opposite the stone ships and Grydehøj. You must bring your own firewood or barbecue coals.
Lejre Museum at Hestebjerggård is fully wheelchair-accessible and also has a wheelchair-accessible toilet. The marked hiking trail is not recommended for wheelchair users, but the road from the car park at Ravnshøjgård may be used by wheelchair users. From here, the distance to the stone ships and Grydehøj is only approximately 500 metres.
Many people use nature - and for widely different purposes. Therefore, a code of conduct has been set out for the use of nature. The code of conduct has been introduced to ensure that the outing will be a pleasant experience for as many people as possible.
For those interested in history, Gl. Lejre is the perfect destination. Here, you may literally wander around the history of Denmark and get an idea of what it was like to live in the Iron Age and the Viking Age. If you follow the marked hiking trail shown on the map, you will pass all the most significant sights. At the same time, you get a very special experience of nature.

The whole route from Lejre Museum past the stone ships and Grydehøj across Ledreborg Å past Hyldehøj across Lejre Å and back to Gl. Lejre to the mound Harald Hildetandshøj and back to the museum at Hestebjerggård is approximately 3 km.
You may also cross the road at the museum and walk up the dirt road past the halls and further up to Mysselhøj. You are permitted to cross the field and walk up to the mound. From here, there is a great view of the countryside.
Finally, there is a path which leads from the main road and up through the Herthadalen valley. This route is about 2.5 km.
Skjoldungestierne is a network of trails, which all traverse Gl. Lejre. The trails involve trekking on nature's premises and, sometimes, parts of the trails may be difficult to pass. Therefore, they cannot be recommended for traffic with bicycles, prams or wheelchairs.
The path between Gevninge and Osted follows Lejre Å and is at approximately 10 km.
The path between Roskilde and Hvalsø crosses marshes, forests, open farmland and commons and along creeks and lakes. The route is approximately 30 km long.

Gudernes Stræde is an approximately 64-km-long hiking trail through natural and cultural-historical landscapes. Gl. Lejre is the centre of the route. In many places along the way, there are opportunities for small diversions and tours. Along the route, there are signposts and about 80 information posts with short informative texts on nature, culture and local history.
A new cycle path has been constructed between Gl. Lejre and Gevninge.
Munkevejen
is a cycle route from Glückstadt, located approximately 30 km north of Hamburg, to Roskilde Cathedral, which traverses Gl. Lejre. It leads past historical, Christian sites.

You may also combine your outing to Gl. Lejre with a geocaching treasure hunt. There are several caches in the area.
